Adaptive Driving Devices

AHCPBG is committed to providing a range of Adaptive Driving Devices for our members and members of our collaborating organisations with disabilities.  Adaptive Driving Devices include hand controls, left foot accelerators, spinner knobs, and pedal extenders.  Such devices are available at no additional charge. 

While AHCPBG will use good faith efforts to satisfy requests for vehicles with hand controls, left foot accelerators, spinner knobs, or pedal extenders, as soon as reasonably practical, we may require up to two to three business days’ notice for vehicles equipped with Adaptive Driving Devices depending on the location of the branch where such a vehicle is requested. 

Surrogate Drivers

Members and members of our collaborating organisations with disabilities who do not have a driver's license can still rent with AHCPBG when accompanied by a surrogate driver who presents a valid driver's license. Minimum age restrictions and other normal rental qualifications apply, but there is no additional charge for the surrogate driver and the surrogate driver need not produce a credit card or otherwise be required to meet our financial underwriting requirements.

If You Wish to Rent a Lift-equipped Van

AHCPBG does not offer lift-equipped vans for rental. In many major metropolitan areas, specialty companies offer vehicles equipped with wheelchair lifts and other devices for both short-term and long-term rental. AHCPBG Vehicle Hire Services for the Physically Challenged and Disabled People

At AHCPBG Vehicle Hire Services, we want to make your rental experience as easy and convenient as possible. A full range of special services for physically challenged renters are available to both the AHCPBG customer and any member of the traveling party. The basic services we offer are detailed here. If you need additional information or assistance, please ask an AHCPBG representative.  The following features are available:

Hand controls

At our transport services locations, vehicles equipped with hand controls are available at no extra charge. Reservations for vehicles equipped with hand controls can be automatically confirmed with as little as 8 hours’ notice at major airport locations, and as little as 24 hours’ notice at other major locations.*

One-way rentals of hand-control vehicles are permitted without any extra cost for the special equipment. However, certain restrictions and intercity fees do apply to all one-way rentals. Please check for details at time of reservation.

* While AHCPBG is able to provide hand controls on a wide variety of its rental vehicles, it cannot provide them on each model. Also, while AHCPBG makes every effort to provide its physically challenged customers with a two or four door vehicle, AHCPBG cannot confirm a particular make or model.

Spinner Knobs

Steering wheel spinner knobs are also available the AHCPBG Transport Services locations to assist physically challenged drivers. Please request at time of reservation. Automatic confirmation is usually available with as little as 24 hours’ notice at most major AHCPBG locations.

Accessible Parking

All AHCPBG corporate locations have designated accessible parking at vehicle return areas. When returning your rental vehicle to an AHCPBG location, you should inform the AHCPBG representative of any special needs, and they will direct you to the accessible parking area.

Easy Access Bus

For AHCPBG customers using wheelchairs, our new Easy Access bus provides an electrically-operated ramp as well as two health and safety compliant wheelchair positions. Wider doors, spacious aisles, and waist high luggage racks are also designed to make traveling easier and more comfortable.

AHCPBG Reservation System

To ensure that your specific needs are met, AHCPBG Hypertrax technology allows our system to identify five different special needs: left-hand controls; right-hand controls; steering wheel spinner knobs; visual impairment; and a customer with a disability or that a member of the traveling party has a disability.

Drivers for the Blind or Physically Challenged People

Drivers for the blind or physically challenged people who hold a valid driver's license and are at least 25 years of age may drive an AHCPBG vehicle rented by the person for whom they are driving. Such drivers are considered to be authorised operators under the terms of the AHCPBG Rental Agreement. When reserving a vehicle, you must advise AHCPBG that you are visually or physically impaired and that you will be renting a vehicle and providing a licensed driver. You must also be present at the AHCPBG counter at the time of the rental.
